HEADLINE: NEW JAPANESE CANDYMAKER THREAT

TOKYO - Extortionists whose harassment of two companies has triggered a nationwide alert are threatening to poison the products of a third major candymaker, two Tokyo newspapers reported today.

In a letter to the Osaka office of the third confectionery, the extortionists demanded $243,000 in cash, the newspapers reported.

They did not identify the company. Osaka police would not comment.

"We are the culprits involved in the (Ezaki) Glico and Morinaga (and Co.) incidents. If you do not want to become another Glico and Morinaga, put out cash. If you don't respond, we'll poison your products," the newspapers quoted the letter as saying.
